Judge Advocate Reminder On Non-Political Organization

As we move closer to the Mid-Term Elections I’d like to take this time to remind everyone that The American Legion is a NON-POLITICAL organization.

REFERENCE: The Constitution of The American Legion, Department of Virginia, Inc. Article II. Section 2. AMERICAN LEGION IS NON-POLITICAL, Page 2.

Which reads: “The American Legion shall be absolutely non-political and shall not be used for the dissemination of partisan principles nor for the promotion of the candidacy of any person seeking public office or preferment”.

I respectfully ask that you pass this information to your Post’s to ensure this article of our constitution is strictly adhered to.

We recently had an “incident” where one of our Post’s rented their building to a political group and that group hung a political banner on the Post building. The Department received a formal complaint on this incident from the opposing political party and we are anticipating possible further action.

While The Department fully understands that renting your Post is a financial gain this “financial gain” doesn’t eliminate or lessen the directives of The American Legion nor does it alleviate your Post’s responsibility to maintain OVERSIGHT & RESPONSIBILITY of an American Legion Post.
